This paper examines sex-selective abortions among selected immigrant populations in Italy using birth register data from 2003 to 2022, through the application of seven distinct statistical measures. First, I compute the two traditionally most used indicators, namely proportion of males and sex ratios at birth (SRB), along with 95% confidence intervals. Second, I calculate the implied number of missing girls, using two different methods. Third, I derive the fraction of couples and parents using sex-selection. Finally, I apply logistic regression models to assess the probability of female births across different population groups and at different parities. Findings indicate significantly male-skewed SRBs for mothers from India, China, the Philippines, Macedonia, Egypt, and Albania, with India displaying the highest imbalance. In contrast, Nigeria and Sri Lanka show significantly female-skewed SRBs. A higher SRB does not univocally translate into a higher number of missing girls nor into a higher fraction of couples using sex-selection. The study underscores the limitations of relying solely on SRB indicators, emphasizing the need for more nuanced measures that consider the demographic context, and contributes to the understanding of prenatal sex selection within migrant communities in Italy, offering insights for policymakers addressing gender imbalances and reproductive health disparities.
