Power generation through a small hydro project needs generating equipment. The chapter deals with the details of electro-mechanical equipment. These consist of turbine and generator. Various types of turbines are used. These are described along with the criteria for their selection for a specific project. Selection of turbine depends on head, efficiency and specific speed and these are also discussed in this chapter. Setting of turbine with reference to tail water level is important for a reaction turbine and it is also discussed. The two types of generators which are coupled with turbine have been described briefly. Generally, in an SHP generators up to a capacity of 5 MW which are ‘off-the-self’ available are used. Their terminal voltage varies from 415 V to 11 kV. Other auxiliary equipments required in a power house are also mentioned here.
