This chapter deals with the layout of small hydro projects. These projects are of three types viz run-of-river scheme, dam-based project and project utilising canal falls or river rapids/falls. Their layouts are described. In a run-of-river scheme water is diverted into a canal or tunnel from the river by constructing a diversion structure and the power house is located at the end of water conductor. Depending on the length of water conductor, either a surge tank or a forebay is provided at its end in the upstream of power house. A penstock, generally a steel pipe, connects surge tank or forebay to the power house. Measures to manage sentiment during monsoon are also provided both in the upstream and downstream of the intake. The layout of run-of-river scheme is discussed in detail along with the details of the above-mentioned structures. In dam-based projects the power house is located at the downstream of the dam. An intake structure with the dam is provided. The intake is connected to power house through a small penstock which is generally embedded in body of the dam. A canal based power project needs a by-pass channel, an intake and the power house and these are located by the side of the main canal. The layout of the three types of small hydro power projects has also been illustrated through examples.

摘要
