Future management professionals are increasingly immersed in a context where promoting sustainable development is essential, as evidenced by numerous studies. In Brazil, despite the regulatory efforts of various councils and educational bodies, there is little visible interest from these entities, including universities, in fostering sustainability-focused competencies. With the new extension legislation coming into force in early 2023, universities now have the opportunity to consistently integrate sustainability into their student training processes. Therefore, the main aim of this article is to discuss the competencies students can develop, based on a literature review, to significantly contribute to sustainable development in their future careers. The starting point is the role of a university in the south of Brazil as a mediator in developing sustainability-focused competencies. By integrating these competencies into learning environments, the university fosters both individual student growth and the development of a professional workforce aligned with sustainability demands. This approach reflects the urgency of preparing professionals to face the constantly evolving environmental and social challenges.
