The climate emergency and the quest for sustainable development pose significant challenges for contemporary societies. In this scenario, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) emerge as vital catalysts for innovation and the application of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. This study explores the implementation of Living Labs as a practical and integrated approach, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially focused on quality education (SDG 4) and action against global climate change (SDG 13). Living Labs, understood as user-centered open innovation ecosystems, promote the development of sustainable solutions in real contexts, are proposed as fundamental strategies to engage both the academic and external community in HEIs. Regarding the methodology to be employed, field research will be conducted in two real-life situations present in two HEIs: “Smart Greenhouses” and “School Garden”, which are characterized as learning and research environments. Through two case studies: “Smart Greenhouses” and “School Garden”, it is demonstrated how Living Labs can serve not only as centers for learning and research but also as platforms for generating sustainable income and improving the quality of life for local communities. Besides promoting social and environmental benefits, these initiatives are expected to lead to cost reductions and greater autonomy for the involved communities, paving the way for more sustainable and resilient development. This work emphasizes the importance of innovative approaches such as Living Labs in teaching and research at HEIs, proposing a participatory and collaborative methodology that can significantly expand the impact in the fight against climate change.
