There is growing concern about environmental preservation and sustainable food production in various sectors. In Brazil and worldwide, agriculture faces significant challenges, including soil and water depletion, biodiversity loss, and social and economic crises, especially in rural communities and family farming. Agroecology promotes sustainable and integrative practices, making it a promising alternative to conventional agriculture. This study reports on an example of this practice via the implementation of an Agroforestry Systems (AFS) demonstration unit in the Canudos Settlement, in Goiás state, Brazil. The aim was to increase production and add value to the artisanal products made by the women of the so-called Guerreiras de Canudos group, promoting environmental sustainability, food security, and income generation. Implementing the AFS demonstration unit in the Canudos Settlement proved effective in diversifying agricultural production and promoting sustainable practices. The project strengthened the collective organization of the group’s women, encouraging collaborative work and the application of agroecological practices. The demonstration unit provided new income-generating opportunities through the production of fruit, medicinal, and aromatic plants, as well as essential oil-based products. It has also become a reference point for farmers in the region and the site of educational activities for different teaching institutions. The study significantly contributes to sustainability in higher education by creating a space for practical and theoretical learning about agroecology and sustainable practices. The AFS demonstration unit serves as a living laboratory for undergraduate students and other institutions, promoting the integration of traditional and scientific knowledge. This initiative not only enriches the academic curriculum, but strengthens the connection between the university and the local community, encouraging the application of knowledge for sustainable development.
