In this chapter, we delve into the consequences of politicizing street-level bureaucracy, which involves hiring political appointees to carry out services rather than professionals. Street-level bureaucrats (SLBs) play a pivotal role in implementing policies and engaging in daily interactions with citizens. They serve as the public face of the state and act as gatekeepers of public services. Despite having a high level of discretion, they operate within the influence of political, organizational, and policy contexts. Changes in the political landscape can impact the behavior of street-level bureaucrats, and they may face political pressure to alter their actions. Despite their distance from the center of power, street-level bureaucrats are crucial for politicians, as the latter require cooperation to implement their agenda. This chapter analyses the politicization of street-level bureaucrats employing political appointees for service delivery instead of professional workers. Examining loyalty, political dependency, and political relations inherent in political appointees, we explore how this practice can alter the nature and behavior of the street level. Drawing on preliminary fieldwork conducted with health workers in Brazil, we analyze the implications of politicizing service delivery.
