Sustainable Management of the Loumbila Dam Water Resource in Burkina Faso for Market Gardening: Diagnostic and Prospects, a Case Study

Nowadays, water resources face huge problems such as climatic variability, natural disasters and human activities. Thus, demographic growth not only leads to strong pressure on water resources but also conflicts of use and problems of water management in order to produce vegetables. This work aims to assess strengthen the participatory and sustainable management of the Loumbila Dam water resource in order to optimize efficiency in its management in irrigation and vegetables production. A qualitative and quantitative approach is used. It consists of data collection, interviews with stakeholders, field trips, analysis and processing of data obtained using software (Kobocollecte, Word, and Sphynx). Data collection revealed that the main water users are market gardeners, breeders, arborists, fishermen, hoteliers, construction, and public works companies. It also appears that 61% of these users do not know the structures insole in the management of the dam. In addition, the analysis of the roadmap with the Sustainable Development Analysis Grid (SDAG) showed that the social, ecological and governance dimensions are well taken into account in the current management system with a satisfactory situation, while the dimensions economic, cultural, and ethical are weakly integrated. These analyses enabled us to suggest ways of improving the network, including the education of network users and their periodic training, and to make recommendations for the implementation of a management framework by shore.
