Effects of Unsteady Aerodynamics on the Flight Dynamics of Sounding Rockets

This paper presents a study on the effect of unsteady aerodynamic components on sounding rocket flight dynamics. Due to asymmetry in the design and the roll motion at high speed, sounding rockets may undergo strong oscillations in the attitude during flight. This may be a main source of aerodynamic unsteadiness. In this paper, the panel method was used together with some theoretical correction terms for the unsteady aerodynamic coefficients of a sounding rocket model operating in a wide range of flight speeds up to 1000 m/s. The flight dynamics model was built based on the six-degree-of-freedom equations of motion, considering variations in the inertial parameters and location of the center of mass. The unsteady effect also can be observed at some other stages of the flight such as the end of the rocket burn and around resonance peaks.
