Assessing the safety of existing infrastructure is a significant concern for those responsible for managing these assets. In Italy, a relevant number of reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed concrete (PRC) girder bridges were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, many of which remain in service today. Currently, there is an ongoing initiative to progressively replace or strengthen these bridges, raising questions about their current load-bearing capacity during this transitional period and how they can be effectively equipped by monitoring devices. This study details the preparation, and key findings of a full-scale experimental test conducted to the point of failure on a PRC bridge beam from a girder bridge built around 1960. The bridge in question, the Mollere viaduct, was located near Ceva, Italy, on the A6 Torino-Savona highway. It had a simply supported static design with end half-joints and a span of 34.60 meters. The beam was prestressed using a post-tensioning method. The study highlights the main challenges encountered during the experimental campaign and discusses the preliminary findings regarding the structural response and the interpretation of monitoring outcomes during the test.
