Impact of Tram Passage on an Old House in Bucharest, Romania

This presentation concerns vibration measurements related to tram movements carried out in a residential building in downtown Bucharest, Romania. The building, which shows significant cracking on some of its walls, is located on a street where vehicles and trams travel in a single direction, in close proximity to the building. Vibration recordings made inside the house show that the tram causes vibrations more than 20 times greater than the average background noise of the street. Additionally, these vibrations last longer than those produced by the passage of heavy vehicles (buses or trucks). Furthermore, it is shown that vibrations on the upper floor are amplified around the building's fundamental resonance frequency. Moreover, on the ground floor near the entrance door inside, measurements were performed using a triaxial accelerograph, and the records during the passage of trams showed peak amplitudes in the same order of magnitude as free-field seismic records from Vrancea subcrustal seismic source, obtained at a seismic station at about 1.2 km distance, from earthquakes with magnitudes in the range of moment magnitudes between 3.5 to 5.
