The United States (U.S.) and multiple other countries are facing an unprecedented mental health crisis, disproportionately impacting children and youth. In 2001, the U.S. Surgeon General announced a crisis in child and adolescent mental health (Office of the Surgeon General U.S., 2001). Since then, children’s mental health has progressively worsened, reaching an unprecedented crescendo in the lingering wake of the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., Lo et al., 2020; Samji et al., 2022). The pandemic exacerbated mental health issues due to social stressors (Adegboye et al., 2021) and increased rates of trauma (de Miranda et al., 2020), while school closures further limited the availability of school mental health (SMH) services and dramatically reduced positive social interactions, contributing to an “epidemic of loneliness” as declared by the current Surgeon General (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [DHHS], 2023).
