Transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals face systemic exclusion and discrimination, reinforced by cisnormativity and rigid gender binary norms. Consequently, they experience significantly higher rates of suicide attempts and self-harm compared to the general population. This chapter provides an overview of the current evidence on suicide in the TGNC population, with a particular focus on Latin America. It explores the Minority Stress Model, which explains the heightened suicidality among TGNC individuals—both youth and adults—because of chronic stressors related to stigma, prejudice, and discrimination. Additionally, the chapter introduces a comprehensive model examining how identity development in TGNC youth is intricately linked to their experiences of suicidal ideation and behavior. Lastly, it highlights the protective role of gender affirmation processes, including psychological, social, and medical aspects, in reducing suicidality and promoting overall well-being in this population.
