Feeling Complementarity: Giorgio Prodi and the Biosemiotic Analysis of Protosemiosis in Nature

In this paper I will present Giorgio Prodi’s (bio)semiotics by showing how his perspective presents itself as a material semiotics. In this regard, I will delineate the scholars who have embraced his proposition, showcasing a modeling characterized by complementarity. Starting from Prodi’s material semiotics, the process of semiogenesis will be identified and theorised together with his perspective of the lowest level of signification in the natural world through protosemiosis. After that, the paper presents how biosemiotics has redefined the notion of protosemiosis and applied it to the domain of life. The objective of this article is to critique the contemporary employment of protosemiosis in biosemiotics and illustrate how the semiosis of living organisms, even at its most rudimentary stages, also manifests in non-living entities through two case studies: a robot made from octopus-shaped hydrogel material and artificial cells. Finally, using Peircean semiotics, it will be shown how one can justify a material semiosis that extends to the non-living, whose forms of sensibility can be defined through the feeling of complementarity in the field of sense-making.
