Inner speech is a process of internal silent communication with the self that is related to both human internal cognitive processes and culture (Vygotsky, MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 2012). This dyadic nature of inner speech is vividly reflected in its crucial role in meaning-making (Fadeev, Sign Systems Studies 50 (2–3): 286–316, 2022). In our research we address the role of inner speech in meaning-making through artistic texts. While the experience of inner speech with verbal texts (e.g., reading books) might seem at least expectable then its presence in the situations of texts mediated via other artistic languages remains under explored. The given study relies on the previous research on inner speech in semiotics in relation to culture, meaning, syntactic and semantic structure, relation to environment, the role of I-positions and mediation in order to establish a theoretical framework and a possible empirical methodology towards investigating the experience of inner speech when interpreting the works of visual art (street art). The methodology includes the development of an inner speech questionnaire with a following semi-structured interview. The article provides an overview of the developed methodology and the following discussion of the pilot study (n = 5) conducted to testify the developed methodological framework in the empirical scenario.

摘要
