Sleep disturbances and postpartum depression are closely interconnected. The connection between altered sleep and depressed mood states has been described as far back as ancient times. Here, we describe the current state of knowledge regarding biological and psychosocial risk factors as well as protective factors and strategies to reduce the risk of developing postpartum depression. Finally, we describe the current state of interventions aimed at helping mothers and families struggling with this condition.
