Introduction: A Look at Fossil Resources and Bioeconomy Alternatives
摘要
This chapter examines the unsustainable trajectory of our fossil fuel-dependent global economy, highlighting its profound impacts on climate stability, resource depletion, and ecological systems. It traces the historical evolution of fossil resource exploitation and its role in powering unprecedented economic growth while generating increasingly severe environmental consequences. As an alternative paradigm, the chapter introduces a biobased economic model centered on renewable resources operating within natural carbon cycles. Key concepts explored include the diverse properties and applications of biobased materials, circular economy principles, and the strategic utilization of biomass for both material production and energy generation. Promising opportunities as well as significant challenges of transitioning to a biobased economy are addressed, while considering the complex ethical questions surrounding natural resource stewardship in an era of environmental crisis.
