Constituents of Productivity in Information Systems Work Environments: A Conceptual Model

Knowledge workers are a vital resource for organisations functioning within information systems (IS) environments. Happy workers have been proven to be more productive workers. It is thus advantageous for organisations to create a human-centred work environment that can increase the productivity of the knowledge workers in their team. Various perspectives exist on how productivity can be measured within IS work environments. These range from more subjective measurements, such as perceived productivity, to more objective measures, such as the number of lines of code published within a given period of time. However, little research has been done on the components that constitute productivity within these work environments. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify the constituents of productivity for IS knowledge workers within IS work environments. The review found that constituents of productivity could be split into technical and soft aspects that affected productivity either positively or negatively. It was also determined that technical aspects influencing productivity could be evaluated using objective measurements, and soft aspects influencing productivity could be evaluated using subjective measures. Based on these findings, a conceptual model was created that can aid in creating tools to measure productivity.
