The Nineteenth-Century Marine Chronometers of the Royal Astronomical Observatory of the Spanish Navy in San Fernando
摘要
The introduction of scientific navigation methods on the ships of the Spanish Navy in the second half of the eighteenth century led to a need among its officers for good instruments, especially marine chronometers. These instruments had to be checked at the Observatory before reaching their destination, where they were entered in the inventory. Despite the economic crisis that the Observatory suffered throughout the nineteenth century, its use as a depository for naval instruments and chronometers was consolidated. In the middle of the nineteenth century, the stock of chronometers amounted to more than 200. At present, there are about 20 marine chronometers on display in the Observatory's collection, which are being restored.
