Image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) encompasses non-consensual creation, acquisition, and distribution of private sexual images, spanning both physical and digital media. Traditionally examined within socio-legal contexts, recent forensic psychological perspectives offer a fresh understanding of IBSA and propose a taxonomic framework distinguishing revenge pornography, upskirting, deepfake media production, and cyber-flashing, each with unique characteristics and significant impacts. Revenge pornography involves the harmful distribution of explicit images, often following relationship breakdowns. Upskirting captures intimate images surreptitiously for sexual gratification or humiliation. Deepfake media production manipulates likenesses to create sexual content, posing significant privacy threats. Cyber-flashing entails unsolicited sharing of explicit images via digital platforms. This chapter contextualizes these behaviours, explores social judgments and beliefs about IBSA, and highlights the necessity for multidisciplinary collaboration to address evolving technological and legal challenges in IBSA prevention and victim support.
