The Internet and Sexual Arousal: Development, Maintenance, and Escalation of Sexual Offending
摘要
We consider the impact of the internet on sexual offending, with a focus on pornography. As pornography is readily available on the internet and much of the internet is populated by various forms of pornography, the possibility that exposure to that pornography may play a role in the development, maintenance or escalation of sexual offending is important to examine. We consider three crucial elements: Does the internet increase exposure to sexually explicit material? Does the internet increase exposure to a greater breadth of sexually explicit material, from softcore to hardcore? And does this sexually explicit material differentially impact on how we respond to it and how it affects us? We conclude that pornography may be a risk factor, however that risk interacts with individual vulnerabilities.
