The preceding chapters have focused on identifying gaps in the account of visual metaphor provided by conceptualist and linguistic theories, recruiting visualist theories of drawing and depiction to fill those gaps, and using the resulting observations to describe how metaphorical conceptualisation allows readers to derive rich narrative meanings from sequences of drawn images. Disparate narrative drawings have been employed to illuminate theoretical claims. This last chapter focuses primarily on one substantial comics text, David B.’s Epileptic. The analysis focuses on how visual metaphors are initiated and developed over the course of this lengthy memoir. At the end of the first section, I introduce questions of empathy and ethics by comparing the metaphors David B. uses to those employed by epilepsy patients to describe their own seizures. I then analyse my own use of metaphor to conceptualise my experience of multiple sclerosis, framed in terms of the arguments developed in this chapter and across the book as a whole. Finally, I return to Epileptic’s last chapter to make concluding comments.
