This final chapter examines the foundations of medical ethics and ties an age-old oath to modern-day responsibilities. It looks at misunderstandings from both the clinician and patient standpoint and suggests ways to avoid them. Barriers to quality care are reviewed. The chapter also looks at the progress that clinicians have made in providing equitable care, extending life expectancy, and improving the lives of everyone. By showing what clinicians have already accomplished through clinical interventions and nuanced approaches to care, and aligning these positive outcomes with the Hippocratic oath and Florence Nightingale pledge, the reader will be further motivated to internalize and implement these important differences in the clinical care of African Americans.
