The period from December 1963 to July 1974 was a period of profound suffering and uncertainty for TCs. They were under veritable siege in their fragile enclaves suffering inhuman restrictions, completely deprived of their constitutionally guaranteed rights. Having realised their objective of being the single legitimate authority of the island, there was no necessity left for GCs to respect the equality of the TC people. Additionally, the partiality of the UN left little room for fair play, justice and equality-based resolution. On 26 June 1967 the GC House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution declaring its commitment to the ENOSIS ideal. On 15 November 1967 Greek and GC military units attacked the Geçitkale/Kophinou enclave, killing 24 TCs, obliging Türkiye to warn that it would intervene unless the attacks were immediately ceased. This obliged Makarios to stop the fighting and ease the restriction on the TCs. This facilitated the resumption of intercommunal talks in 1968, which dragged on until May 1974 without any result. In the meantime, the Greek Junta started to regard Makarios as an obstacle to their plans to speedily realise ENOSIS, preparing the ground for the coup of 15 July 1974 to realise union with Greece.
