In their first informal meeting Tatar underlined to Anastasiades that, as equals, they needed to respect each other’s equal inherent rights and status and show this in practice so that the ground could be prepared for meaningful negotiations. In his letter to UNSG Guterres, Tatar stated that it had become necessary to re-affirm the sovereign equality and equal international status of the two sides to reach common ground to start negotiations aimed at establishing a new bilateral cooperative relationship. Tatar shared this vision with UN Senior Official Lute, UK’s Cyprus Settlement Coordinator Sharma, British Secretary of State Raab and High Representative of the EU Borrell in his following meetings. The informal five-plus UN meeting called by Guterres in Geneva could not yield common ground to start negotiations. However, in his following report to the SC Guterres stated that Turkish and GCs have equal inherent rights. In July 2022, GCs refused six TC cooperation proposals aimed at building confidence and preparing the ground for equality-based settlement. In his address to the 77th Session of the UNGA, Turkish President Erdoğan called on the international community to end the persecution of TCs and formally recognise the TRNC. In November 2022, the TRNC was admitted to the Organisation of Turkic States as Observer Member.
