Malnutrition (including undernutrition and overnutrition) among women is a public health concern, and the progress has been too slow, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). It is given prime consideration during pregnancy and lactation due to its direct effect on the mother and the fetus. The negative consequences and associated factors with maternal malnutrition led to several international targets and strategies, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations Children’s Fund nutritional strategy, and the strategic framework for maternal nutrition. Interventions including nutritional counseling, macronutrient supplementation (balanced energy proteins, fortified blended food, lipid-based nutrients, and ready-to-use supplements), and micronutrient supplementation (such as calcium, vitamin A, zinc, iron, folic acid, and multiple micronutrient (MMN) supplementation) have shown a positive impact on maternal and child health. Antenatal and postnatal care are also considered integral in early detection of complications and improving family planning outcomes in the postpartum period. All these interventions align with the SDG targets, which help ensure prosperity in health, ultimately contributing to a resilient and healthier future for the generations.
