The principle of subsidiarity is undoubtedly a fundamental principle within European Union Law and in the Union’s relationship with the Member States. Despite the principle’s central place in the European Union framework, doubts surrounding its implementation have arisen consistently and at a pace that has shown no signs of slowing over the years. This chapter analyses the developments that have occurred to date regarding the principle of subsidiarity and seeks to provide some insights with regard to its future development.
