This chapter outlines the role and functions of the electric grid within the energy system, examining the main components, architecture, and functions that make it "smart." Among the several proposed architectures for a smart grid today, the one proposed in (Amin and Giacomoni in IEEE Power Energ Mag 10:33–40, 2012) is selected and described. Special attention is given to traditional elements of the electric grid, particularly powerful energy storage systems, highlighting their crucial role in ensuring the efficient operation of both traditional and smart grids.
