This chapter discusses the emergence of plagiarism as a significant issue in Romania, particularly following a 2012 scandal involving the former prime minister. Since then, this incident led to numerous accusations against many government officials and public persons. Notably, the decisions made by ethical committees and courts often conflicted with investigative journalism and publicly accessible evidence, as well as with each other or between similar cases. The chapter also explores how media representation influences public perception of the academic and ethical implications of plagiarism and the response of Romanian academia on this sensitive topic. The analysis draws on a range of public sources, including media reports, court documents, and expert opinions. The second part discusses cultural and institutional factors that may explain its seemingly endemic character. The chapter concludes by suggesting some comprehensive approaches for effectively addressing plagiarism in Romania and elsewhere.
