This nation’s cities represent a major sector of society and when its health is compromised through gun violence, it touches the lives every resident, either directly or indirectly. Although gun violence is a national problem, it has particular significance on its cities and marginalized sectors. There are the obvious ways through the number of deaths and physical injuries on victims. However, there are other ways in which it touches all of lives through increased costs of treating and rehabilitating victims. The presence of gangs and the availability of high-powered weapons have played an important role in shaping this violence and its consequences, which are often invisible. This chapter will provide an expansive and multifaceted picture of urban gun violence and why the death care sector has experienced increased gun violence.
