This chapter gives a brief introduction to the study of two-dimension (2-D) systems, mathematical models that lead to the representation using 2-D systems as well as some basic models of 2-D systems. We also present some preliminary results on the stability and stabilization problems of a basic model of 2-D systems. Finally, we give a preview of the main content of each chapter presented in this monograph.
