Research of Radioactive Areas and Radon Gas Distribution Activity and Analysis of the Geological Nature of “Hot Spots” in Zangilan District

Zangilan district, located in southwestern Azerbaijan, is a vital region of Karabakh characterized by fertile soils, favorable climate, and rich natural resources. This strategic area faced severe environmental and infrastructural damage during its 27-year occupation, including resource exploitation, war-induced destruction, and landmines. After liberation in 2020 during the Second Karabakh War, reconstruction efforts began, encompassing agricultural redevelopment, residential rebuilding, and infrastructure projects. However, addressing the environmental impacts, particularly radioactive contamination and radon gas emission, remains critical for ensuring human and ecological safety. This study adopts two complementary approaches. First, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing analyses were employed to identify environmental hot spots. Satellite data such as vegetation index map provided insights into the region’s ecological state. Second, field measurements using a portable gamma spectrometer evaluated gamma radiation dose rates and effective activity levels of isotopes like 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th. like. The integration of these methods facilitated a comprehensive understanding of radioactive contamination at local and regional scales. The findings aim to identify and assess environmental risks in Zangilan’s reconstruction process. By analyzing hot spots and geological structures, this research establishes a scientific framework to minimize risks and guide sustainable redevelopment efforts.
