It is now time to illustrate the theoretical concepts developed in the course of this book with some specific examples, mainly taken from our daily practice of the HFR networks in the region of Toulon and Nice, France. We briefly present the instruments and sites and illustrate the main properties of the radar signal, both in the time and frequency domain, with some elementary examples. We introduce the range Doppler representation and show the difference between the omnidirectional Doppler spectra, which are not resolved in azimuth, and the directional Doppler spectra resulting from azimuthal BF processing. We also show the difference between monostatic and bistatic systems. We then discuss the choice of integration time and the number of incoherent sample spectra, and give some guidelines on how to obtain radial surface current maps with the different types of azimuthal processing. Finally, we discuss the issue of calibration, which has a major impact on the accuracy and resolution of the current maps.

摘要
