Methods in Neurosociology

One primary challenge faced by aspiring neurosociologists is developing a solid understanding of the methodologies used in the field. This is even furthered by the highly technical nature of these approaches. This can result in a barrier to entry, especially for individuals with no background in these methods. With that in mind, this chapter provides an introduction and overview of the methods commonly used in neurosociology and is intended to be accessible to those who have little experience in the field. In the chapter, we highlight three prominent neuroscience methods that have played a significant role in expanding the field of neurosociology: electroencephalography (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). We offer explanations of their function, the analytical techniques associated with them, their strengths and limitations, and recommendations for implementation. We also discuss hyperscanning—the collection of neural data from multiple actors—and highlight its importance in the study of social interaction. Finally, we conclude this chapter by expanding upon the advantages and disadvantages of a neuroscientific approach to sociology and an emphasis on our goal of advancing the field of neurosociology.
