Becoming Entrepreneurial
摘要
In this chapter I illustrate the series of events that catapulted me into the world of independent creative labor, and the way I had to position myself, and my research, in order to engage with the community I sought to study. I also discuss the impossibility of understanding some forms of knowledges through simple observation and argue that ethnographers must attune their research protocols to fit the practices and discourses of the communities they want to study. In my case, this meant combining my research methods with entrepreneurial practices to understand what it’s like to live and work in the start-up culture. By engaging in the same discourses and practices employed by my participants, I was able to relate to others’ experiences and to render my project—and myself—intelligible to the people with whom I was trying to connect.
