This chapter turns to the broader question of toleration. What forms of toleration should liberal democracies cultivate, especially when religion divides as much as it unites? I distinguish between public and private toleration, explore the idea of civic toleration, and develop a conception of pragmatic toleration, e.g., a flexible, non-doctrinal approach grounded in political judgment rather than theoretical abstraction.
