This chapter introduces the religious laws governing Jewish divorce (get), and the gendered asymmetries they often reproduce. I outline the functioning of dual legal systems in Israel and illustrate the plight of women known as agunot (lit. “anchored” or “chained”). Women who cannot remarry because their husbands refuse to grant them a religious divorce.
