Soil Pollution Risks of Onshore Petroleum Exploration Drilling and Possible Bioremediation Methods
摘要
Exploration drilling is the process of drilling wells to explore the presence and extent of oil and gas resources in the subsurface. The process poses risks for soil pollution and environmental degradation. Potential sources of soil contamination from exploration drilling are (1) spills and leaks of drilling fluids, lubricants, fuels, and chemicals used in the drilling operations; (2) disposal of drill cuttings and waste, which may contain traces of hydrocarbons, metals, salts, and other pollutants that can alter the soil properties and pose health risks to humans and animals; (3) flaring and venting of associated gas, burning or releasing natural gas that is produced along with oil affecting the soil microclimate and vegetation. This chapter explores potential sources of soil pollution and proposes bioremediation, soil washing, and thermal methods as potential solutions for remediation caused by exploration drilling.
