We inhabit increasingly digitised publics. As of February 2025, approximately 5.56 billion individuals—representing 67.9% of the global population—were internet users, with 5.24 billion (63.9%) actively engaging with social media platforms (Petrosyan 2024). This has led Firth et al. (2019, 119) to note that internet access has become so widespread and portable that much of the developed world may now be regarded as perpetually connected. Within this digitally mediated environment, the parameters of human sociality have expanded significantly, with social media platforms functioning as primary instruments of interaction, self-expression, and community formation.
