The conclusion synthesises the core insights and contributions that this book provides. This entails summarising the preceding chapters and reflecting on various novel and interconnected contributions to different literature strands, most importantly eco-social policy, global social policy and global governance. The book presents a crucial step in forging a new research field: the study of global eco-social policy. While discussions concerning global eco-social policy have largely served to create awareness about the nexus of environmental and social considerations within global policy arenas, empirical investigations often stopped at surface-level observations, such as the integration of climate change into the agenda of global social policy actors, or the employment of the Sustainable Development Goals as a blueprint for eco-social policy. This book, though, provides the first comprehensive eco-social policy assessment of crucial global governance actors, specifically the OECD and the World Bank. It shows that those policy-actors are far from being homogenous organisations. They are rather characterised by the double movement dynamic, meaning that they do not simply promote the first movement of economic liberalisation, but that they also entail the countermovement within the organisations, which leads to a stabilisation of the existing capitalist mode of production. Furthermore, the conclusion reflects on the results. For example, not all observed policy elements considered from an eco-social policy perspective result from explicit processes and attempts of merging environmental and social policy agendas. This suggests that some of the global policies and their eco-social nature may be implicit rather than explicit. Furthermore, this book lays a solid foundation for delving deeper into the “politics of eco-social policy” within international organisations and reflects on the necessity of further research.
