Following an examination of the hallmark features of Pareto’s intellectual profile, the introductory chapter highlights a notable discrepancy in the reception of his economic writings, which have garnered significant acclaim, as compared to his sociological and political studies, which have received considerably less recognition. Nevertheless, revisiting the thought of a scholar who is regarded as one of the founding figures of the social sciences proves to be particularly fruitful. In particular, the theoretical insights he bequeathed, such as those concerning the significance of emotions in the unfolding of social life, the role of elites, and the transformation of democracies, remain highly valuable for interpreting contemporary realities. Anticipating themes that will be further developed and explored throughout the volume, the chapter also underlines that Pareto’s interpretative framework in his sociological investigations is essentially binary in nature, being grounded in an opposition between alternatives. Finally, it offers preliminary reflections on the central concern of Pareto’s entire oeuvre, namely political and social equilibrium.
