This chapter introduces the Australian migration system and explores the migration and settlement experiences of African Australians, as well as their contributions to Australian society. It examines how pre-migration factors, such as colonialism and war, disrupted peace processes and hindered social and economic development, subsequently influencing migration to Australia. Additionally, the chapter discusses the various forms of violence that African Australians have experienced and how these experiences are interconnected, particularly regarding family violence. Ultimately, the chapter concludes that these experiences of violence shape how African Australians perceive themselves within the legal system, their legal consciousness, and their interactions with colonial legal frameworks.
