Nourishing Oral Health for a Radiant Smile
摘要
This chapter examines the critical issue of oral health and its intricate relationship with nutrition and dietary patterns. While oral health diseases and conditions—such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and tooth loss—are global burdens, they are also national priorities in the United States due to their strong links to systemic health. In addition to highlighting existing disparities and the determinants that influence these conditions, this chapter explores the essential macro- and micronutrients needed to maintain strong teeth and gums, offering guidance on their benefit and sources of these nutrients. Emphasizing the role of dietary patterns, it also examines the harmful effects of sugar-sweetened and acidic foods and beverages on oral health, along with the influence of meal timing and mindful eating practices. Finally, the chapter addresses the importance of integrated oral healthcare, calling for cross-sector engagement with stakeholders and communities to promote holistic health outcomes. By understanding and addressing these elements, we can move toward achieving optimal oral health outcomes for all.
