A Holistic Guide to the Nutritional Management of Obesity
摘要
This chapter begins by explaining obesity in terms of the measure given by the World Health Organization (WHO), namely body mass index (BMI). It explores the nutritional management of obesity via an emphasis on diet and physical activity. Further, it delves into the risk factors and impacts of obesity, which are followed by the management of obesity by using dietary approaches. The dietary approach includes macronutrients and their role in contributing to obesity. It highlights popular weight-loss diets and their overall health effects. This is followed by weight-loss approaches such as meal planning and portion control which can be put into practice following My Plate guidelines and recommendations. The chapter details the importance of physical activity in obesity management and behavioral changes for long-term weight management. It delves into adjunct weight-loss approaches, such as pharmacotherapy and surgical procedures, discussing the mechanisms, benefits, and potential risks associated with these medications. Furthermore, by examining these two major approaches to weight loss and maintenance, this chapter aims to guide readers and researchers in formulating multidimensional approaches for combating obesity and promoting sustained weight loss.
