Cultural Considerations and Addressing Patient Values
摘要
This chapter emphasizes the importance of cultural considerations and addressing patient values in healthcare. It highlights that patients bring diverse beliefs, values, customs, and experiences that shape their worldview of illness and health. Neglecting these factors can hinder the quality of care and patient-provider relationships. Recognizing patient and provider cultural systems and values is crucial for effective care to diverse patients. Cultural competency is essential for addressing varied beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. Understanding the impact of culture is vital as it influences perceptions of normality, illness causation, treatment approaches, decision-making dynamics, and the use of alternative therapies. Ignoring cultural issues results in isolation, anxiety, poor communication, and nonadherence. Practicing cultural humility by honoring patients’ beliefs and values, cultivating curiosity, and fostering mutual respect can enhance patient-provider relationships and improve outcomes. Addressing implicit biases reduces healthcare disparities. Patient-centered care with cultural understanding and open communication leads to equitable and effective care.
