Sensory integration refers to the brain’s ability to organize and process input from various sensory channels. It is the neurological mechanism that makes sense of sensory input from both inside our body and the environment. Persons with intellectual disabilities generally have problems processing sensory information. This problem may be aggravated by additional mental health conditions, causing everyday sensations to be experienced as perplexing or alarming. Sensory discomfort can lead to behaviour that challenges. By recognizing and addressing these underlying sensory integration difficulties, caregivers can tailor treatment plans to meet the sensory needs of each person, aiding their nervous systems in filtering and organizing sensory input effectively. This chapter includes a thorough description of sensory modulation disorder, sensory over- and under-responsivity, and an overview of evidence-based practices, illustrated by a case presentation.
