The legal basis for the concept of sustainable development as a human right is established in this paper, which shows that sustainable development goes beyond environmental issues and comes to be a comprehensive process aiming at improving human well-being and protecting the rights of future generations. The article also assesses the impact of important international conferences that have defined the concept, starting with the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in 1972, which laid the foundations for recognizing the link between environment and development. Followed by the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro which brought forth “Agenda 21” and defined the goals of sustainable development. Also, the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg is mentioned for real-adding a practical dimension to the achievement of these goals. Also, the importance of the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna is stressed for its confirmation of the need to include human rights in sustainable development plans. These conferences have created an international structure that helps the mixing of human rights with environmental policies which in turn helps the global chase for sustainable development.
