Revolutionizing History Education: The Role of AI in Enhancing Historical Analysis and Interpretation

This chapter discusses the role of Artificial Intelligence in making history education more transformative by enhancing historical analysis and interpretation. The challenges for historical teaching in presenting critical thinking to students, along with accessible forms of assessment, make the promise of AI rather attractive. A mixed-methods approach is taken, where qualitative and quantitative analyses are conducted in the Jordanian context. The qualitative part consists of an extensive review of literature pertaining to the application of AI in history education, taking into consideration the practice, the challenges, and the opportunities that currently exist. One hundred fifty students’ survey data was used in the quantitative part to measure the impact of AI tools on students’ interest and understanding of historical concepts and their critical thinking skills. Also, qualitative data from 20 history teachers and curriculum designers is thematically coded to reveal their views on the usefulness of AI and its associated threats. The chapter wraps up by saying that though AI holds great promise in augmenting historical education, its application should be with a degree of caution, making sure that there is a balance between technological development and humanistic teaching principles.
