The European Union’s plan to reduce EU-wide transport-related CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles cannot be realized without considering the GHG emissions generated during the manufacturing and electricity production phases of EVs. The European Union Funded Horizon Europe ESCALATE project approach is proposed as a proactive strategy to optimize resource utilization, minimize environmental impacts, and enhance the overall sustainability and circularity of electric vehicles (EVs) while meeting the financial aspects. ESCALATE develops solutions for 3 types of electrified vehicles (battery, fuel cell, and range extender) including the charging or refuelling infrastructure. By integrating TCO and sustainability considerations into the vehicle’s design, architecture, and manufacturing processes, EV manufacturers can identify the most suitable solutions for business needs and budgets, ensuring long-term success in the competitive EV market. This paper presents the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Life-cycle Assessment (LCA) approach formulated by the ESCALATE project to reveal lifetime-extended environmental and economic aspects of electrified trucks and emphasizes the importance of considering the TCO and sustainability requirements, namely life-cycle, early in the project planning phase for electric freight vehicles.
