Integrating Parcel Delivery Services into Public Transport Operations Through a Common ICT Platform

Transport organizations and local authorities are facing growing challenges due to increasing traffic within city centers caused by delivery traffic. New sustainable mobility concepts for urban logistics are therefore needed that are able to make use of the existing infrastructure in a more efficient way by decreasing the overall traffic volume. The project logIKTram focuses on shifting delivery traffic from road to rail on medium and short distances by integrating cargo tram operations into a common ICT platform, specifically on extending the public transport planning and control systems (ITCS) and the design of interfaces between public transport and logistics systems. The ICT platform follows a data broker architecture (MQTT) enabling data provision to all relevant systems including the logistics, the public transport and the tracking as well as the booking system. Existing systems in place, such as the on-board computer (OBU) of the tram, the ITCS of the public transport operator, the load carrier system of the logistics provider, as well as the booking and tracking system of the freight operator will be modified and connected via interfaces with the ICT platform allowing seamless integration of all systems.
